Summer always seems to end the same way.
One minute your child is convinced they have three more months before school starts. The next minute you're standing in the school supply aisle wondering why a folder somehow costs more than lunch.
Backpacks get replaced. Shoes suddenly don't fit. Haircuts get scheduled. Lunchboxes magically disappear, even though you know they have to be somewhere in the house.
And somewhere in the middle of all that excitement, one important item often gets overlooked:
Your child's dental checkup.
At Burien Children's Dentistry, we believe the start of a new school year is one of the best times to make sure your child's smile is healthy, comfortable, and ready for everything the classroom has in store. A healthy smile helps children eat comfortably, speak clearly, and feel confident when they're making new friends or smiling for school pictures.
Whether your family lives in Burien, SeaTac, Normandy Park, or a nearby community, scheduling a pediatric dental checkup before the first day of school can help your child start the year with confidence—and help you avoid unexpected dental problems once classes are underway.
Summer routines are... flexible.
Bedtimes become "whenever the movie ends."
Breakfast becomes lunch.
Somehow, everybody is eating popsicles at ten in the morning and nobody thinks that's unusual.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying summer. That's what summer is for.
But when routines change, brushing and flossing sometimes become less consistent. Add vacation treats, sports drinks, ice cream, lemonade, and backyard barbecues into the mix, and children's teeth often experience a little more excitement than they would prefer.
Before school starts, a professional dental visit gives your child a clean slate.
Instead of wondering if everything is okay, you'll know.
A toothache doesn't care if your child has a spelling test.
Or picture day.
Or the first soccer practice of the season.
Dental problems have an amazing ability to appear at the least convenient times.
That's why preventive dentistry is so valuable.
At Burien Children's Dentistry, our goal isn't simply to treat problems—we want to help prevent them whenever possible.
Routine pediatric dental visits allow us to:
Finding a small concern today is much easier than dealing with a painful emergency during the middle of the school semester.
Children know when adults are comfortable around kids.
Some people walk into a room and immediately start talking like they're reading instructions from a microwave manual.
Kids notice.
Dr. Sofia and Dr. Scott don't approach pediatric dentistry that way.
They're a husband-and-wife team of board-certified pediatric dentists who genuinely enjoy working with children. They're also parents themselves, which means they understand both sides of the dental chair.
Dr. Sofia graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arizona, earned her DDS from the University of Washington, completed her pediatric dentistry residency through NYU Langone Hospitals, served as Chief Resident, and later joined the residency program as faculty.
Dr. Scott, a Pacific Northwest native, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Portland before receiving his DDS from USC. He completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency through Idaho State University before finishing his pediatric specialty training through NYU Langone Hospitals.
Together, they share one simple goal:
To exceed the standard of care while making every child—and every parent—feel welcome.
Kids brush.
Usually.
Sometimes enthusiastically.
Sometimes with the same amount of effort they use when asked to clean their room.
Professional cleanings reach areas that even excellent brushing can miss.
During your child's visit, plaque and tartar are carefully removed before they contribute to cavities or gum irritation.
Their teeth are polished until they feel smooth and clean, making it more difficult for plaque to stick around afterward.
Most kids leave running their tongue across their teeth because everything suddenly feels incredibly smooth.
Adults do it too.
We just pretend we don't.
Children's enamel is still developing.
That makes protecting it especially important.
Fluoride treatments strengthen enamel and make teeth more resistant to the acids produced by cavity-causing bacteria.
The treatment itself only takes a few minutes.
The protection lasts much longer.
Especially after a summer filled with frozen treats, sports drinks, and family vacations, fluoride can provide an extra layer of defense heading into the school year.
Back teeth have deep grooves.
Food loves those grooves.
Bacteria love those grooves even more.
Children aren't intentionally missing those tiny spaces while brushing—they're simply difficult to reach.
Dental sealants create a protective barrier over those chewing surfaces, helping prevent food particles and bacteria from settling where cavities commonly begin.
For many school-age children, sealants are one of the easiest ways to reduce cavity risk.
During your child's appointment, Dr. Sofia and Dr. Scott can determine whether sealants would be beneficial.
A new school year is the perfect opportunity to restart healthy routines.
Here are a few simple habits that make a big difference:
Morning brushing starts the day fresh.
Evening brushing removes everything that collected throughout the day.
Both matter.
Toothbrushes clean surfaces.
Floss cleans the places toothbrushes simply can't reach.
Together, they make a great team.
Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, and nuts are generally kinder to teeth than sticky candies or sugary snacks.
School lunches don't have to be perfect.
They just don't have to resemble the dessert menu at a county fair.
Water helps rinse away food particles while supporting healthy saliva production.
It's one of the simplest things children can do for their teeth.
Parents have choices when selecting a pediatric dentist.
We don't take that trust lightly.
Families throughout Burien, SeaTac, Normandy Park, and surrounding communities appreciate our gentle approach, comfortable environment, and commitment to creating positive dental experiences.
We understand that every child is different.
Some arrive excited.
Some arrive nervous.
Some have approximately seventeen questions before sitting in the chair.
All are welcome.
Our goal is to make every visit educational, comfortable, and encouraging so children build confidence with dental care that lasts well beyond elementary school.
Before backpacks are filled...
Before school pictures...
Before homework returns...
